# Alpha Vantage vs Yahoo Finance: Free Quotes vs a Documented API

Alpha Vantage vs Yahoo Finance compares a paid, documented API against free unofficial US stock quotes, priced from both providers' own pages.

Alpha Vantage vs Yahoo Finance is a choice between paying for a documented, supported feed and taking a free one nobody guarantees. Yahoo Finance wins for real-time US stock quotes at no cost; Alpha Vantage wins if you need a real API, global symbols, or built-in technical indicators.

## Alpha Vantage vs Yahoo Finance: the feature comparison

Yahoo Finance real-time data covers major US exchanges for free, with no signup and no API key, but Yahoo shut its official API down in 2017, and every access path since has run on an unsupported scrape. Alpha Vantage sells a documented REST API with over 100,000 global symbols, 50-plus technical indicators, and an Alpha Vantage free tier capped at 25 requests a day with no real-time data at all. Neither is built for options.

## Can you use either one commercially?

Not on their self-serve plans. Yahoo’s terms of service bar automated collection and any commercial reuse, at every tier. Alpha Vantage quotes a commercial license through its sales team, with no published price. A production app needs a licensed source either way; ours runs through our partner Intrinio for commercial and redistribution use.

**Yahoo Finance**

6.6/10 Free real-time quotes for major US exchanges, but it is an unofficial, unsupported API.

Strengths

- Free real-time quotes for major US exchanges
- 40+ years of history on the Gold plan
- Huge app-store ratings (4.8/5, 621,000 reviews)

Weaknesses

- No official API — shut down in 2017, now scraped
- Terms of service bar automated collection and commercial reuse

Yahoo Finance is free, and its real-time quotes for major US exchanges are the best deal in this comparison if a scrape is good enough for you. Its app carries a 4.8-out-of-5 rating across 621,000 reviews, and the paid Gold tier adds 40-plus years of history and advanced charting for [$49.95 a month on Yahoo’s own plans](https://help.yahoo.com/kb/yahoo-finance-plus/select-plans-sln36623.html). What it does not offer is an API: the official one shut down in 2017, so every integration today runs on reverse-engineered endpoints that can break without notice. In August 2026 we onboarded an options research service that was replacing Yahoo Finance as its backend price source, and support tickets that say our numbers are wrong against Yahoo Finance usually trace to a dividend-adjustment difference or a foreign-ticker collision, not a data error.

**Alpha Vantage**

5.2/10 20+ years of history and global symbols, but real-time is gated and unconfirmed in feed basis.

3/10

Strengths

- 100,000+ international symbols
- 20+ years of history claimed
- 50+ built-in technical indicators

Weaknesses

- Free tier capped at 25 requests/day
- No websocket delivery
- Trustpilot 2.4/5 (11 reviews)

Alpha Vantage is the broader, supported choice: over 100,000 international symbols, 20-plus years of history, and 50-plus built-in technical indicators, reachable through an official Google Sheets add-on, a beta Excel add-in, and a hosted MCP server for AI agents. None of that is free past 25 requests a day; paid plans start at [$49.99 a month on Alpha Vantage’s pricing page](https://www.alphavantage.co/premium/), $41.58 on the annual plan. Its Trustpilot rating is 2.4 out of 5 on 11 reviews, with complaints about stale “real-time” data and slow support.

## Is a product that shows only derived scores still commercial?

Yes, if other people see it. In August 2026 a startup building a paid options research service asked to use our API only on its servers, as a replacement for Yahoo Finance. Its customers would only ever see its own scanner scores and option picks, never our prices.

We still classed it as commercial use, because the output served a paid product to other people, and we referred it to our partner Intrinio. The same rule separates it from the personal case: a subscriber who feeds our data into an AI assistant for his own trading stays on a personal plan.

## What does a price mismatch with GOOGLEFINANCE usually mean?

In our support history, a different listing or a different adjustment, not bad data. In September 2025 a Sheets user reported a symbol more than 10% away from GOOGLEFINANCE, stamped 17:30 instead of the 4 p.m. close.

GOOGLEFINANCE was returning a Stockholm listing with the same ticker, and the customer confirmed it. His second symbol differed because we had adjusted its history for a January 2025 spin-off and the free source had not. Our STOCKDATA formula takes an unadjusted option when you want prices as traded.

## Should you choose Alpha Vantage or Yahoo Finance?

Choose Yahoo Finance for a free, real-time US stock quote and nothing more formal than that. Choose Alpha Vantage if you need international symbols, technical indicators, or a supported API you can build a real product on.

Market Data fits neither job directly: we cover US stocks and options only, with no forex, crypto, or international symbols, and commercial or redistribution use runs through our partner Intrinio rather than the plans on our [pricing](/pricing/) page. What we do better is options: real-time OPRA chains with greeks included on every quote, which neither Yahoo Finance nor Alpha Vantage matches. Our [US stock market data](/data/stocks/) page lines up what we cover, and Yahoo’s terms of service are exactly the kind of restriction our [stock data licensing guide](/education/stocks/stock-market-data-licensing/) explains how to read.

Both providers also sit in our ranking of [financial data providers](/alternatives/financial-data-providers/), and the [best stock API](/alternatives/best-stock-api/) comparison scores all of them, Alpha Vantage and Yahoo Finance included, on the same six criteria.
