A financial modeling prep alternative is worth choosing when options data is the job. FMP’s documentation and homepage show no options endpoint, and its MCP tool list does not either. We scored 16 alternatives to it on six weighted criteria. EODHD ranks first; we rank second, tied with Twelve Data.

FMP still does plenty well, covered below. Every figure here comes from each provider’s own pages, checked on 26 September 2026. Real-time prices and price for value count double in our scoring; history and developer experience count one and a half times each.

Weaknesses

  • Real-time price is a derived SmartMid, not raw NBBO
  • No websocket streaming
  • No forex, crypto, or international stocks

Our real-time stock price starts at $12 a month billed annually, and our options API returns real-time OPRA chains with Greeks and IV included, billed per contract returned on the $30 Trader plan and above, and the 30-day trial never includes real-time options, since OPRA entitlement needs a paid account first. We cover US stocks and options only, plus mutual funds, well short of FMP’s global reach.

Twelve Data

7.1/10 190,000+ symbols and 250+ exchanges, but the entry tier for real reach is $66-79/month.

Twelve Data covers more than 190,000 symbols on over 250 exchanges and streams over WebSocket, with a 4.4-of-5 Trustpilot rating from 57 reviews. Its free plan works on trial symbols only, and it has no options data either.

What does Financial Modeling Prep do better than the alternatives?

FMP’s real strength is fundamentals: statements, ratios, DCF models, 13F institutional filings and insider trades sit behind one API key, alongside global stocks plus forex and crypto, from $22 a month billed annually.

It also ships native Google Sheets and Excel add-ins plus an official MCP server, none of which needs a separate account or key. Its own status page reported 99.999% uptime over the past 24 hours on the day we checked.

Why are developers leaving Financial Modeling Prep?

7.2/10 Up to 30 years of history and a $22/month entry tier make this a strong value pick.

Weaknesses

  • Real-time basis undocumented on paid tiers
  • No official SDK, community-maintained only

FMP’s Trustpilot rating is a bimodal 3.8 of 5 from 98 reviews: 64% five-star, 23% one-star. One reviewer wrote, “every week I’m spending hours…auditing…to find out that FMP’s data is wrong.”

Another described a documented endpoint that quietly started returning “not available under your current subscription” for every Indian symbol, with no email or notice, and a refund refused for five weeks. A third called the experience “extremely disappointing,” citing “API limitations, unavailable data, inconsistent results.” Separately, a production integrator reported FMP returning fractional Unix timestamps that broke a pipeline 96 times in one weekday.

Which FMP alternative fits which need?

Pick EODHD for the deepest history and the best reviews if real-time can wait for a $99.99 plan. Stay with FMP, or Twelve Data, for fundamentals and filings, plus multi-asset breadth beyond stocks alone. Pick us for US options with real-time Greeks included, in Sheets or through the API, at a lower entry price than FMP’s mid tier.

Why can prices from FMP differ from ours on the same day?

Usually because one source adjusts past prices for later splits and corporate actions and the other does not. Adjusted history changes whenever a new corporate action lands, so a value you fetched last month can come back different today.

That default cost us. In April 2026 an institution valuing donated stock told us our highs and lows disagreed with other quote sites, and it withheld a subscription payment for five weeks while we investigated. A donation is valued at the price that traded that day, so it needed unadjusted candles: two query parameters removed all five discrepancies it reported. The same review found a real bug that dropped the third decimal from some prices, and we fixed it.

Why do we refer commercial use of FMP to a partner?

We stopped selling to business customers ourselves in February 2025, when IEX ended free redistribution of real-time stock prices for business use. From then on, every business plan carried exchange fees per customer and compliance work our small team could not carry.

So we refer commercial buyers to our partner Intrinio. Between 1 and 25 September 2026 we sent it 22 commercial enquiries, about one a day. The test we apply is display: if other people see the prices, or scores built from them, the use is commercial.

When is Market Data not a financial modeling prep alternative?

Choose FMP or another provider on this list if you need fundamentals depth, SEC filings, 13F data, or coverage outside the US. Commercial-tier rate limits begin at 2,000 requests per minute on our own API, well above any personal plan, but redistribution still needs a separate commercial agreement.

Our stock market API and options data pages describe what we do cover, and the full ranking of financial data providers scores all 19 providers we researched, FMP included. The best stock API ranking narrows the same research to stock prices alone, and FMP’s own pricing page carries its current tiers.

If Financial Modeling Prep is one of several providers on your list, our pages on Finnhub alternatives and Wisesheets alternatives use the same rankings.

Two head-to-head pages cover FMP against a single rival: FMP vs Alpha Vantage and EODHD vs FMP.
