# Finnhub Alternatives: 18 Financial Data Providers Ranked

The best finnhub alternative depends on whether you need options data, which Finnhub has none of. We ranked 18 providers on price and quality.

- [Max Nowak](/about/), Operations Manager
- Last updated September 26, 2026

A finnhub alternative is worth choosing the moment options data matters, because Finnhub’s own Swagger schema lists zero option endpoints among its 116 paths. We scored 18 alternatives to it on coverage, price, quality, developer experience, access and licensing clarity. EODHD ranks first; we rank fourth, tied with Massive.

Finnhub still has real strengths, covered below. Every figure here comes from each provider’s own pages, checked on 26 September 2026.

Each provider was scored from 0 to 10. Coverage, price for value and quality each count double, and licensing clarity counts least of all. A 10 is the best offering among the providers we researched, not a flawless product.

Strengths

- 150,000+ tickers across 60+ exchanges
- Trustpilot 4.7/5 (146 reviews), the best here
- Free Sheets/Excel add-ins and a 72-tool MCP server

Weaknesses

- Real-time gated to the $99.99/mo ALL-IN-ONE plan
- Options data is EOD-only, no intraday
- Pricing split across five-plus separate tiers/add-ons

EODHD leads on breadth and reviews: 150,000-plus tickers across 60-plus exchanges and a 4.7-of-5 Trustpilot score from 146 reviews. Real-time needs its $99.99 plan, and its options are end of day only, a real gap next to Finnhub’s alternative-data breadth.

**Financial Modeling Prep**

7.3/10 Fundamentals-and-filings breadth at a low price, but no options product whatsoever.

4/10

Strengths

- 100+ REST endpoints: statements/ratios/DCF/13F
- Native Sheets add-on, Excel add-in, and MCP server
- $22/mo entry tier, billed annually

Weaknesses

- No options, chains, or Greeks at all
- Trustpilot 3.8/5 with data-accuracy complaints
- No official SDK, community-maintained only

Financial Modeling Prep matches Finnhub on fundamentals depth, statements, ratios, 13F filings and insider trades, starting at $22 a month billed annually. Like Finnhub, it has no options product at all.

**Market Data**

6.9/10 Deep US options and Sheets support, but the narrowest asset coverage of the broad providers here.

Strengths

- Flat, transparent credit pricing
- Free forever tier, no card required
- Real-time OPRA options with free Greeks/IV
- Trustpilot 4.5/5 (110 reviews)

Weaknesses

- No forex, crypto, futures, or international data
- No websocket streaming, no MCP server
- Excel add-in still unshipped

Our options API returns real-time OPRA chains with Greeks and IV included, billed one credit for each contract the call returns, on the $30 Trader plan and above, and the 30-day trial never includes real-time options because OPRA entitlement needs a paid account first. Commercial plans begin at $333 per month through our partner Intrinio, while Finnhub’s own terms route any business use to individually negotiated written approval. We cover US stocks and options only, plus mutual funds, so a developer who needs Finnhub’s forex or crypto coverage, or its alternative-data endpoints, should look elsewhere on this list.

## What does Finnhub do better than the alternatives?

Finnhub’s real strength is alternative data: congressional trading, ESG scores, patents, lobbying records and earnings-call transcripts sit beside ordinary quotes in one account, at a depth few competitors on this list match.

It also ships official SDKs in six languages, a hosted MCP server for AI agents, and embeddable charting widgets nobody has to build from scratch. If that breadth is the job, Finnhub earns its place.

## Why are developers leaving Finnhub?

4.9/10 Broad alternative data but no options at all, and the worst reputation scores here.

3/10

Strengths

- 116 REST paths across stocks, forex, crypto, and alt-data
- 6 official SDK languages plus an MCP server
- Congressional trading, ESG, and patents data

Weaknesses

- Zero options endpoints (0 of 116 Swagger paths)
- No published free-tier limit
- 1.5/5 on SourceForge and Slashdot

Finnhub’s SourceForge and Slashdot ratings are both 1.5 of 5, from two reviews each. “Feeds are extremely delayed, prices are only sometimes accurate,” one wrote.

Another put it more bluntly: “Overall it feels like a 90’s company trying to operate in the modern world. Avoid, avoid, avoid…” A third said: “I rarely leave 1-star reviews, but my experience with Finnhub has been extremely disappointing.”

Options are the sharpest gap. A GitHub feature request for options data has sat open since February 2022, and the legacy Python SDK’s own `option_chain()` method still throws an error when called. Finnhub’s free-tier limit is not published anywhere on its own pricing page either, which third parties estimate at roughly 60 calls a minute.

## Which Finnhub alternative fits which need?

Pick EODHD for the deepest history and the best reviews if real-time can wait. Pick Financial Modeling Prep for fundamentals and filings at a lower entry price than most on this list.

Stay with Finnhub for congressional trading and ESG data, plus the patent and lobbying records nothing else here bundles the same way. Pick us if US options with real-time Greeks are the job, in Sheets or through the API.

## Can you try our real-time options before paying?

Not on our trial. In September 2026 a prospect asked whether he could try real-time options on the 30-day trial before paying $75 for a month. Real-time options need the OPRA entitlement, and only a paid Trader plan can sign it, so trial options data is at least a day old.

What covers that test instead is our refund: a full refund within 14 days of purchase. Even after paying, two steps come before real-time options switch on, the OPRA subscriber agreement and a self-certification of non-professional status, usually approved within a business day.

## What if you need a commercial license for Finnhub?

We refer you to our partner Intrinio. We made that change in February 2025, after IEX ended free redistribution of real-time stock prices for business use, because exchange compliance for business customers was more than our small team could handle.

The volume is steady: from 1 to 25 September 2026 we passed on 22 commercial enquiries. Each one described a product that would show prices, or something built from them, to other people.

## When is Market Data not a finnhub alternative?

Choose Finnhub or another provider on this list if you need forex or crypto, or Finnhub’s alternative data such as insider transactions and SEC filings. We sell none of it beyond earnings.

Our [stock market API](/data/stocks/) and [options data](/data/options/) pages describe what we do cover, and the [full ranking of financial data providers](/alternatives/financial-data-providers/) scores all 19 providers we researched, Finnhub included. The [options data providers ranking](/alternatives/options-data-providers/) narrows the same research to the chains and Greeks Finnhub does not sell, and [Finnhub’s own API documentation](https://finnhub.io/docs/api) is the fastest way to confirm what it covers today.

If Finnhub is one of several providers on your list, our pages on [Alpha Vantage alternatives](/alternatives/alpha-vantage-alternatives/) and [Polygon alternatives](/alternatives/polygon-alternatives/) use the same rankings.

For Finnhub against Alpha Vantage alone, read [Finnhub vs Alpha Vantage](/alternatives/finnhub-vs-alpha-vantage/).
