A GOOGLEFINANCE alternative is worth paying for when you need options, fundamentals, reliable fund prices or intraday history in Google Sheets, because the free function has none of them. We ranked 10 Sheets add-ons against GOOGLEFINANCE itself. Sheets Finance ranks first, and our own add-on ranks second. Every figure comes from each provider’s pages, checked on 26 September 2026.
For plain stock quotes, GOOGLEFINANCE is hard to beat on price, and we say so to customers. In July 2026 our support team told one: “I believe Google Finance does include real-time stock data.” For a pure quote, our advantage is intraday candles and options, not the quote.
What can GOOGLEFINANCE not do?
GOOGLEFINANCE returns prices delayed by up to 20 minutes, has no options data at all, and returns #N/A for most mutual funds. Google’s own disclaimer forbids professional use and redistribution at any price.
The function also fails without warning: one customer told us they wanted to “escape GOOGLEFINANCE() formula hell” in their trading dashboard, which describes a sheet full of #N/A cells better than we could.

It sells market data, brokerage and options as separate subscriptions, its options product is 15 minutes delayed even when paid, and it offers a 15-day trial rather than a free plan.

Our add-on is free to install and works on our free plan. Its formulas include OPTIONCHAIN and OPTIONDATA, which return options chains and greeks in cells, something GOOGLEFINANCE cannot do at all. Stock quotes in the add-on are real-time IEX prices on paid plans. Since April 2026, a cell that Sheets evaluates again with the same inputs costs no credits.
One detail matters if you script Sheets. Our API accepts one IP address at a time, and Google Apps Script runs from rotating Google IPs, so only the Sheets add-on refreshes safely from Google Apps Script. In September 2026 a customer hit that limit from an Apps Script project, tried Massive the same afternoon, and cancelled with us within the hour. We cover no forex, crypto or financial statements, so a dividend or fundamentals sheet is better served by Wisesheets or EODHD.

What does a price mismatch with GOOGLEFINANCE usually mean?
In our support history, a different listing or a different adjustment, not bad data. In September 2025 a Sheets user reported a symbol more than 10% away from GOOGLEFINANCE, stamped 17:30 instead of the 4 p.m. close.
GOOGLEFINANCE was returning a Stockholm listing with the same ticker, and the customer confirmed it. His second symbol differed because we had adjusted its history for a January 2025 spin-off and the free source had not. Our STOCKDATA formula takes an unadjusted option when you want prices as traded.
Why can’t our API run from serverless functions?
Because the exchanges classify our product as a controlled platform only while one customer device at a time reads the data. Serverless platforms send requests from rotating egress IPs, which breaks that promise, so we allow no IP allowlists or exemptions.
A paying customer asked us for an allowlist in July 2026, for a personal portfolio monitor on edge functions. We said no, and gave him the only alternative the exchanges allow: uncontrolled access with no IP limit, which means historical data only, with every intraday and real-time price switched off.
Which GOOGLEFINANCE alternative is free?
Three add-ons in this ranking are free to install and have a free plan: ours, EODHD’s and Financial Modeling Prep’s. Each free plan is small. Sheets Finance and Wisesheets have no free plan for the add-on.
