Polygon vs Alpha Vantage sets a US options-and-equities specialist, now renamed Massive, against a broader global-data API with no websocket and thinner options tooling. Massive wins for real-time OPRA options and an MCP server with websocket streaming; Alpha Vantage wins for 100,000-plus global symbols and 50-plus technical indicators, plus native Google Sheets and Excel add-ins Massive does not ship.

Polygon vs Alpha Vantage: the feature comparison

Massive vs Alpha Vantage is a breadth-versus-depth choice. Massive covers US stocks and options plus several other asset classes, with websocket streaming and a dedicated MCP server, and its cheapest plan with any real-time entitlement is $199 a month. Alpha Vantage reaches over 100,000 global symbols and ships 50-plus technical indicators built in, with paid plans from $49.99 a month ($41.58 on the annual plan), and no websocket delivery at any price. The SDK story splits the same way: Massive maintains four official client libraries, while Alpha Vantage’s own quickstart guides point developers to community wrappers whose maintainers explicitly disclaim any affiliation with the company. Neither is close on options.

Is Alpha Vantage good for options data?

Not really. Its REALTIME_OPTIONS endpoint exists with an optional greeks parameter, but no chain filtering by strike or expiration was found in the documentation, and historical options return one trading date per call, back to 2008. Massive’s options chains support filtering, and its computed greeks follow the plan’s quote delay.

6.3/10 Full-SIP real-time and 20+ years of history, but real-time starts at $199/month.

Strengths

  • Full-SIP real-time equities from $199/mo
  • 20+ years of history back to 2003
  • 4 official SDKs plus an MCP server

Weaknesses

  • Real-time gated to the $199/mo Advanced tier
  • Trustpilot 2.3/5 (6 reviews)

Massive is the deeper choice for options and streaming: real-time full-SIP stocks and OPRA options from its $199-a-month Advanced plan, plus websocket delivery and flat files. It also ships an official MCP server. Its free tier is 5 calls a minute, end-of-day only. A developer moving off Polygon in June 2026 asked if our annual price would jump the following year — it doesn’t, for any customer, ever. Massive’s Trustpilot rating is 2.3 out of 5 on 6 reviews, the weakest of the three providers here.

Alpha Vantage

5.2/10 20+ years of history and global symbols, but real-time is gated and unconfirmed in feed basis.

Strengths

  • 100,000+ international symbols
  • 20+ years of history claimed
  • 50+ built-in technical indicators

Weaknesses

  • Free tier capped at 25 requests/day
  • No websocket delivery
  • Trustpilot 2.4/5 (11 reviews)

Alpha Vantage is the broader, cheaper entry point outside options: a free tier at 25 requests a day and native Google Sheets and Excel add-ins. It also ships an official hosted MCP server, and full income-statement and balance-sheet fundamentals in every paid plan, which Market Data does not sell. Its Trustpilot rating is 2.4 out of 5 on 11 reviews, with complaints about stale “real-time” data and slow support on paid plans.

Will our price rise after the first year?

No. In June 2026 a developer moving off Polygon asked whether an annual plan would jump the next year “from $30x12 to $75x12.” Our answer was no: pricing is fixed for as long as you are a customer, and the annual discount is the only promotion we run.

It is not a new promise. We gave customers the same answer in December 2022, when one asked how to lock in a lower price and was told he already had it for as long as he kept the plan.

Does our trial include real-time options?

Not on our trial. In September 2026 a prospect asked whether he could try real-time options on the 30-day trial before paying $75 for a month. Real-time options need the OPRA entitlement, and only a paid Trader plan can sign it, so trial options data is at least a day old.

What covers that test instead is our refund: a full refund within 14 days of purchase. Even after paying, two steps come before real-time options switch on, the OPRA subscriber agreement and a self-certification of non-professional status, usually approved within a business day.

Should you choose Massive or Alpha Vantage?

Choose Massive if options depth, streaming or an MCP server for US markets matters more than global reach. Choose Alpha Vantage if you need international symbols, built-in technical indicators, or a Sheets and Excel add-in today. Market Data sits between them for one job: US options with free real-time greeks.

Real-time options cost one credit per contract returned, on the Trader plan and above, and the 30-day trial never includes them. Market Data covers only US stocks and options, with earnings as its only fundamentals data, so a global or multi-statement research workflow will outgrow it fast, and it has no international symbols or technical-indicator endpoints, and no Excel add-in yet. Our pricing page lines up every plan by credit and history depth.

Both providers sit alongside dozens more in our ranking of financial data providers, and the best stock API comparison scores all of them, Massive and Alpha Vantage included, on the same six criteria, from real-time coverage to developer experience and price.
