The best unusual whales alternative depends on what you need, because nothing here replaces Unusual Whales’ options flow, dark pool prints or congressional trade disclosures. We ranked 16 other options data providers for traders who need chains, greeks or history instead, and checked every figure below on 26 September 2026.
We sell options data too, scored by the same rubric as every other provider below. Unusual Whales is not a plain data API; it is an options-flow and market-intelligence platform, and on the thing it specializes in, none of the alternatives here come close.
What does the Unusual Whales API include?
The Unusual Whales API is sold separately from its retail dashboard. Two tiers. API Basic costs $150 a month, with 40,000 requests a day, a two-year historical lookback, real-time options flow with what the company calls 100% market coverage, and real-time Nasdaq equities data.
API Advanced is $375 a month, drops the daily cap to unlimited, and adds forex and CME futures with a live WebSocket tape, plus commodities and economic indicators. Both tiers carry an eight-endpoint Greek and gamma exposure category (delta, gamma, vanna, charm, spot), an eleven-endpoint volatility suite covering IV rank, term structure and skew, and the platform’s signature data: fifteen endpoints tracking congressional trades and four tracking insider trades. Redistribution needs a Business plan, priced from $625 a month billed annually. Neither tier connects to Google Sheets or Excel; Unusual Whales’ own API pricing page lists no integration for either.
Which unusual whales alternative ranks best for options data?
Each provider in our options data providers ranking is scored 0 to 10 on six criteria, from how fresh its chains are to its commercial licensing path. Unusual Whales is scored on the same rubric. ThetaData ranks first among the 16 alternatives below. We rank second.

Unusual Whales
6.1/10 100% real-time options flow coverage with a GEX/volatility suite, but only about 2 years of history.
- Option chains, and how fresh ×2
- 8/10
- Greeks and implied volatility ×1.5
- 8/10
- Historical options data ×1.5
- 3/10
- Price for value ×2
- 5/10
- Ease of use ×1
- 6/10
- Commercial path ×0.5
- 7/10
Strengths
- 100% market-coverage real-time options flow
- GEX and volatility suite included
- Official hosted MCP server
Weaknesses
- Options history limited to about 2 years
- No Google Sheets or Excel integration
Unusual Whales ranks fifth of 17 against pure data providers, because this rubric weights chains and greeks and history over flow and disclosures. On real-time options flow, gamma exposure, dark pool prints and congressional trading data, it has no equal among the 16 alternatives here, and none of them try to compete with it there.
ThetaData
8.6/10 Up to 3rd-order Greeks and tick-level history since 2012, the deepest options analytics here for $40/month.
- Option chains, and how fresh ×2
- 9/10
- Greeks and implied volatility ×1.5
- 10/10
- Historical options data ×1.5
- 10/10
- Price for value ×2
- 9/10
- Ease of use ×1
- 4/10
- Commercial path ×0.5
- 6/10
Strengths
- Up to 3rd-order Greeks (Vanna, Charm, Speed, Zomma, Color)
- Tick-level options history since 2012-06-01
- $40/mo Options Value plan, real-time included
Weaknesses
- REST API and Excel add-in both need a local Java Terminal
ThetaData ranks first on the deepest greeks, to the third order, and tick-level history back to June 2012, for $40 a month. It carries no flow alerts, dark pool data or congressional tracking. Not a flow platform.
Market Data
7.1/10 Real-time OPRA chains with free Greeks/IV, but no historical Greeks and coverage stops at US options.
- Option chains, and how fresh ×2
- 8/10
- Greeks and implied volatility ×1.5
- 6/10
- Historical options data ×1.5
- 6/10
- Price for value ×2
- 8/10
- Ease of use ×1
- 7/10
- Commercial path ×0.5
- 6/10
Strengths
- Real-time OPRA on the Trader plan and above
- Full Greeks and IV on every real-time quote, no extra cost
- EOD chains back to 2010, including expired contracts
Weaknesses
- No historical Greeks/IV for backtesting
- No websocket streaming for options
Our own options API returns real-time OPRA chains with first-order greeks included, from the Trader plan at $30 a month billed annually. Real-time options are billed one credit for each contract the call returns, and the 30-day trial never includes real-time options. We do not sell options flow, dark pool prints or congressional disclosures at any price — the gap this entire page is about.
Tradier
6.8/10 Real-time OPRA with ORATS Greeks, free with any brokerage account, but history excludes expired contracts.
- Option chains, and how fresh ×2
- 9/10
- Greeks and implied volatility ×1.5
- 6/10
- Historical options data ×1.5
- 2/10
- Price for value ×2
- 10/10
- Ease of use ×1
- 6/10
- Commercial path ×0.5
- 3/10
Strengths
- Real-time OPRA options free with any account
- Greeks/IV via ORATS, refreshed hourly
Weaknesses
- Options history excludes expired contracts
- Trustpilot 2.0/5 (28 reviews)
Tradier gives real-time OPRA options with ORATS greeks free with any brokerage account, the cheapest real-time options feed in this ranking if you are willing to open one. It carries no flow, gamma exposure or disclosure data. None of it.
Do any of these alternatives match Unusual Whales’ flow and dark pool data?
No. ThetaData and ORATS sell raw options data or analytics, Massive does too, and Tradier gives away real-time chains, but none packages flow alerts, gamma exposure heatmaps, dark pool prints or congressional and insider disclosures the way Unusual Whales does.
A trader who needs that layer has no match here; a trader who wants chains or greeks or history instead has good options.
Is a product that shows only derived scores still commercial?
Yes, if other people see it. In August 2026 a startup building a paid options research service asked to use our API only on its servers, as a replacement for Yahoo Finance. Its customers would only ever see its own scanner scores and option picks, never our prices.
We still classed it as commercial use, because the output served a paid product to other people, and we referred it to our partner Intrinio. The same rule separates it from the personal case: a subscriber who feeds our data into an AI assistant for his own trading stays on a personal plan.
Why do we refer commercial use of Unusual Whales to a partner?
We stopped selling to business customers ourselves in February 2025, when IEX ended free redistribution of real-time stock prices for business use. From then on, every business plan carried exchange fees per customer and compliance work our small team could not carry.
So we refer commercial buyers to our partner Intrinio. Between 1 and 25 September 2026 we sent it 22 commercial enquiries, about one a day. The test we apply is display: if other people see the prices, or scores built from them, the use is commercial.
Which Unusual Whales alternative fits which need?
None of the four cheaper alternatives replace Unusual Whales’ flow and dark-pool layer, so match the tool to the job rather than hunting for one product that does everything. A trader building a backtester wants ThetaData or Market Data; a developer planning to publish scores derived from options data to their own users faces a different bill entirely.
Unusual Whales’ Business plan starts at $625 a month; Massive’s Options Business plan runs $1,999 a month; our own commercial path is a custom quote through our partner Intrinio rather than a flat price. The financial data providers ranking compares every provider here on more than options, and our own options data API page lists exactly what we sell.
If Unusual Whales is one of several providers on your list, our pages on ThetaData alternatives and Databento alternatives use the same rankings.
