A yfinance alternative is worth switching to once the Python library’s rate limits, IP blocks or breaking changes cost you more time than a paid API would. yfinance scrapes Yahoo Finance’s own pages, and Yahoo’s terms forbid that kind of automated collection. We ranked 14 free stock APIs, official and documented, that replace it.

We are one of the 14, so we have a stake here. A search for a yahoo finance api alternative usually wants the same three things: a documented endpoint, a rate limit set on purpose rather than discovered by accident, and terms that allow a real app. We scored our own free plan with the same rubric as the rest, and it lost points on freshness.

Which free stock API is the best yfinance alternative?

The free stock API ranking scores all 15, Yahoo Finance included; this table leaves it out.

Strengths

  • Real-time data included with any brokerage account, no extra fee
  • Full company lifetime of daily history

Weaknesses

  • Requires a Tradier brokerage account
  • Trustpilot 2.0/5 (28 reviews), the weakest here

Tradier ranks first. Real-time US stock and options data comes free with any Tradier brokerage account, and daily price history reaches back to each company’s first trading day. The API is for personal use, and Trustpilot rates Tradier 2.0 from 28 reviews, the lowest of the group.

Alpaca

6.5/10 200 calls a minute and real-time IEX equities at no data fee, but only with an Alpaca account and for personal use.

Strengths

  • Real-time IEX equities free on Basic
  • 200 API calls/minute, 30 websocket symbols free

Weaknesses

  • Requires opening a brokerage account
  • Trustpilot 2.2/5 (41 reviews)

Alpaca’s free Basic plan streams real-time IEX quotes and allows 200 calls a minute, more than any other free tier here. IEX carries only part of US trading volume, and the full consolidated feed costs $99 a month.

Tiingo

6.4/10 1,000 requests/day free with 30+ years of price history included.

Strengths

  • 1,000 requests/day, 50/hour free
  • 30+ years of price history on the free Starter tier
  • 5 years of DOW 30 fundamentals free

Weaknesses

  • No real-time on the free tier
  • No official SDK

Tiingo’s free Starter plan allows 1,000 requests a day against more than 30 years of daily history, the deepest free archive we found. Real-time quotes need the $25-a-month Power plan, and since February 2025 the full bid/ask feed needs its own signed agreement with the IEX exchange.

Strengths

  • Never expires, no credit card required
  • 1 year of history included free
  • Documented, official product

Weaknesses

  • Free plan is 24-hour delayed, not real-time
  • Only 100 credits/day

Our free plan gives 100 credits a day and one year of history, with stock and options prices 24 hours delayed. In August 2026 we onboarded an options research service that was explicitly replacing Yahoo Finance as its backend price source, feeding a scanner from our API instead of scraping one. A real-time price starts on the Starter plan at $12 a month billed annually; try our stock market API free plan first.

Is yfinance still free to use in 2026?

Yes, but “free” only covers the price. Yahoo’s terms bar automated collection of its data, and yfinance’s own GitHub issues record HTTP 429 errors and multi-day IP blocks through 2026, with no published threshold for either.

No. Yahoo’s terms of service forbid using its content for any commercial purpose and bar building a product that substitutes for its own service. Our Yahoo Finance API guide covers the scraping workaround and where it breaks.

Which yfinance alternative fits which need?

For free real-time stock data, Alpaca, if a brokerage account is acceptable. For the longest free history, Tiingo. For options alongside stocks, ours or Tradier’s, since the options chains yfinance reads from Yahoo are always 15 minutes delayed.

We’ve told developers who assumed a Yahoo-style ticker meant global coverage that we cover US markets only, every year from 2022 through 2026, so anyone trading outside the US should look elsewhere on this list. Our broader best stock API ranking scores the paid tier here against 16 others, and the ranking of financial data providers adds commercial pricing to the comparison.

Is a product that shows only derived scores still commercial?

Yes, if other people see it. In August 2026 a startup building a paid options research service asked to use our API only on its servers, as a replacement for Yahoo Finance. Its customers would only ever see its own scanner scores and option picks, never our prices.

We still classed it as commercial use, because the output served a paid product to other people, and we referred it to our partner Intrinio. The same rule separates it from the personal case: a subscriber who feeds our data into an AI assistant for his own trading stays on a personal plan.

What does a price mismatch with GOOGLEFINANCE usually mean?

In our support history, a different listing or a different adjustment, not bad data. In September 2025 a Sheets user reported a symbol more than 10% away from GOOGLEFINANCE, stamped 17:30 instead of the 4 p.m. close.

GOOGLEFINANCE was returning a Stockholm listing with the same ticker, and the customer confirmed it. His second symbol differed because we had adjusted its history for a January 2025 spin-off and the free source had not. Our STOCKDATA formula takes an unadjusted option when you want prices as traded.

When should you stick with yfinance?

yfinance still makes sense for a class assignment, a weekend backtest, or a script that runs a few times a day and can absorb an occasional block. It needs no signup and no card.

Once a rate limit costs you data on a day that matters, or the code has to run in production, an API built for that is the safer bet.

If yfinance is one of several providers on your list, our pages on IEX Cloud alternatives and Alpha Vantage alternatives use the same rankings.
