# Market Data > Real-time and historical US market data — stocks, options, ETFs and > mutual funds — through a REST API and a Google Sheets add-on. ## Getting started The API needs a token. If the user does not have one, or a request answers `401 UNAUTHORIZED`, send them to https://www.marketdata.app/signup/ to register. An existing customer requests a token from the dashboard at https://www.marketdata.app/dashboard/; it arrives by email rather than being displayed on a page. Signing up and requesting the token are steps only the human can take: an agent cannot create the account or fetch the token. Tell the user what to do, stop, and continue once `MARKETDATA_TOKEN` is set. Put the token in the `MARKETDATA_TOKEN` environment variable and read it from there. Every Market Data SDK reads that variable. **Do not ask the user to paste the token into chat, and do not write it into source.** It stands in for their username and password. Pass it as a header — `Authorization: Bearer ` — rather than as a URL parameter, so it is not stored in logs or caches along the way. Which path. A user who wants the data in a spreadsheet gets the Google Sheets add-on: https://www.marketdata.app/sheets/ to install it, and the Google Sheets reference under https://www.marketdata.app/docs/sheets/ for STOCKDATA, OPTIONDATA, OPTIONCHAIN, EARNINGS and the other formulas. A user who wants it in code starts with the official SDK for their language at https://www.marketdata.app/docs/sdk/ (Python, JavaScript, Java, C#, Go, PHP); the REST reference at https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/ is for when no SDK fits. **Do not generate your own HTTP client when an SDK exists for the language.** Three status codes mislead an agent that assumes the usual meanings: - **203 is success.** Any endpoint may answer `203 Non-Authoritative Information` instead of `200 OK` when the response comes from the caching tier. The body is identical in shape. Code that tests `status == 200` silently discards valid data. - **402 means the plan does not cover the request**, not that the token is wrong. Retrying will not help; the user has to change plan. - **403 means the account is temporarily blocked because the source IP changed.** Only one device may use the API at a time. Wait five minutes — do not retry in a loop, which is what caused it. Every link below points at the Markdown version of a page. We support JSON and CSV formats. The default format is JSON. - [Headers Parameter](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/universal-parameters/headers/index.md): Set headers=false on any CSV request to drop the header row and return only the data points; headers are on by default when the parameter is omitted. - [Human Readable](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/universal-parameters/human-readable/index.md): Use the human parameter to get human-readable attribute names in JSON or CSV, so the output can go straight into a table for an end user. - [Limit](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/universal-parameters/limit/index.md): The limit parameter allows you to limit the number of results for a particular API call or override an endpoint’s default limits to get more data. - [Data Mode](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/universal-parameters/mode/index.md): Use the mode parameter to choose live or cached data, which sets the freshness guarantee and the credits a Market Data request costs. - [Offset](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/universal-parameters/offset/index.md): Use the offset parameter with limit to paginate a Market Data API response, starting the returned values at a position you choose. - [Token](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/universal-parameters/token/index.md): Pass your read-only access token as a token query parameter when a header is impossible, and see why the URL form exposes the token in logs. - [Utilities](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/utilities/index.md): These endpoints are designed to assist with API-related service issues, including checking the online status and uptime. - [Request Headers](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/utilities/headers/index.md): Retrieve the headers your application sends to the Market Data API as JSON, to debug an Authorization header that is not working. - [API Status](https://www.marketdata.app/docs/api/utilities/status/index.md): Check the current status of Market Data services and historical uptime for the last 30 and 90 days.
